Mojang's Minecraft movie adaptation suffered from production problems from the start. It was first announced in 2014 when Steve Carell was supposed to be the star. Then Warner Bros. wanted to build on the success of The Lego Movie. The original launch date was June 2017 with Shawn Levy as director. Planning conflicts, however, forced Levy to leave in 2015. Unfortunately, he took the authors with him. Rob McElhenney (of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) was quickly announced as Associate Director. However, McElanny left with new writer Jason Fuchs in 2018. Most likely due to creative differences with Mojang, who has strict control over the adaptation. After McElhenney's departure, Warner Bros brought in writer/director duo Aaron and Adam Nee to completely revamp the project. Further postponement of the launch to May 2019. However, this will also come to an end. Especially with the suicide of producer Jill Messick in 2018. In fact, fans have begun to believe that this may never happen at all. However, the latest official news about the movie shows that it can finally move forward.

When is the Minecraft movie coming out? According to Minecraft.net, the movie finally has an exact launch date of March 4, 2022. The site also shows that Peter Sollett (Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist) is in the director's chair. In addition, the plot was officially revealed to revolve around a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. "After the evil Ender Dragon sets off on a path of destruction, it's up to them to save their beautiful, blocky World." Sounds simple enough. Now, hopefully, there are no more stumbling blocks between 150 weeks and its release.

The Minecraft movie will be directed by Rob McElney from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. For years, Hollywood has tried and failed to make a good video game movie. For years, moviegoers have suffered a parade of bad Prince of Persia and the worst Tomb Raiders while shrugging their shoulders, accepting the painfully tolerable Resident Evil franchise as the best of the worst consolation awards. Now there may be new hope: Swedish video game company Mojang has found an intriguing new director for its Minecraft movie. The company has officially announced on its website that the as-yet-untitled film will be directed by Rob McElney, the most famous Mac on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

McAlanny created Sunny and Collaborators along with longtime collaborators Glenn Howertown and Charlie Day. Sunny has just finished her 10th season and FXX has at least two more years left. But McElhenney has been moving towards his second act of late: Last year he signed with Legendary to write and direct the fantasy film Figment. It's unclear exactly what the Minecraft movie will look like. At the museum night, director Shawn Levy was pinned down and compared his take on the material to Goonie, but he parted ways with the project precisely because the studio didn't get the idea. Due to his ten years at the Sunny, it's safe to assume that McElenny's take on the material is more farcical, perhaps?

You can freely describe Minecraft as a fantasy game, though it's best understood as a semi-abstract digital lab where you build things out of blocks. "That's a pretty weird idea for a movie" is what you'd think if you didn't really like the LEGO movie. But you did so: optimism! LEGO movie producer Roy Lee is affiliated with Minecraft and the movie is in development at LEGO Warner Bros., so presumably it will be the same but different. For example, the voice of Emma Stone instead of the voice of Chris Pratt and blocks instead of bricks. And by the time Minecraft comes out, things will be different and we'll be doing Suicide Squad jokes instead of Batman jokes and everyone will be laughing so hard when Minecraft is joking with Newt Scamander.
