In the cold, unforgiving land of Skyrim, a healing potion can make all the difference in combat, so avid adventurers memorize the recipe.

Skyrim is one of the few video games whose popularity has lasted for 10 years. Even a decade later, gamers are still coming back to fight hungry wolves, mischievous demigods, and mild civil war. As a Dragonborn, players will find it much easier to survive in harsh environments if they know the recipe for a health recovery potion.

Players have a variety of options for restoring health, from potions and food to items and spells. From the start, all dragonborn can cast healing spells, however this can be slow, put the player in danger, and use up the player's magicka. Instead, many players find it useful to know the recipe for making a health restoration potion - one of the best alchemy recipes in Skyrim - and which ingredients work best.

Updated June 14, 2021 by Mark Hospodar: With the recent announcement of a release date for Starfield, excitement is starting to build among Bethesda fans. Todd Howard describes Starfield as "Skyrim in space". It's a lofty comparison considering Skyrim's popularity hasn't waned even ten years later. Exploring the farthest corners of the galaxy sounds like an enticing prospect that RPG fans are sure to love. However, with Starfield only releasing on November 11, 2022, there's plenty of opportunity for players to explore the land of the Nords a few more times before the new sci-fi epic hits store shelves.

Alchemy 101: how to make a potion to restore health

Newcomers to Skyrim may find themselves at a loss when it comes to alchemy. Luckily, the game has a built-in tutorial that will guide the player through the entire alchemy process. It so happens that the first potion that the game instructs the player to brew is Health Regeneration. Talking to these NPCs will start the learning process:

  • Arcadia, owner of the Cauldron of Arcadia in Kiterun.
  • Orgnar, innkeeper at the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood
  • Zaria, the owner of the "Grave potions" in Falkreat.

Talking to these people and asking about using their Alchemy Lab will trigger a tutorial. Players will receive their first health regeneration recipe consisting of blister and wheat. The Dragonborn can purchase these items from the shop or find them in the wild. After receiving the ingredients, activate the alchemy laboratory and combine them. It is so simple!

How to find the health regeneration effect

In Skyrim, potions and poisons are made by combining two or more ingredients in an alchemy lab. There are four effects for each ingredient, which can be discovered through experimentation (successfully combining at least two compatible elements results in an overall effect), as well as through consumption.

Eating an ingredient unlocks its primary effect. Players should be careful as it includes damage and other negative status effects; players should also consider that only the first effect is revealed upon consumption, unless they have chosen the Experimenter perk(s). In this case, they can gain knowledge of multiple effects by eating the ingredient.

Health Potion Ingredients

  • Two ingredients that have a common effect can be combined into a mixture. Those that restore health include:
  • Wheat
  • blue mountain flower
  • blister
  • butterfly wing
  • blue dart
  • Imp Chair
  • Charred Skeever Hide
  • Willow warbler egg
  • swamp mushroom
  • Saber Cat's Eye
  • Daedra Heart
  • Ash Hopper Jelly (Dragonborn)
  • Tern Feathers Felsaad (Dragonborn)

Additional Creation Club Content Ingredients

It's worth noting that some Creation Club content adds extra ingredients to the base game. These additional ingredients can also be used to craft a health recovery potion if the appropriate content pack (Rare Curios & Saints and Seducers) is installed:

  • Ambrosia
  • cork tree root
  • flame stalk
  • Heart of order
  • marshmarrow
  • Saltris
  • Essence of the Void

If you combine any of the listed ingredients in the alchemy laboratory, you get a health restoration potion. The Dargonborn can consume it to immediately restore a few health points, depending on the strength of the mixture. However, since it is possible to craft a health restoration potion that also damages the player, players are advised to pay attention to the additional effects that the ingredients may have in common. For example, if you combine a butterfly wing with a Daedra heart (one of the rarest alchemy ingredients in Skyrim), you get a potion that restores health and deals magic damage.

Players can mix more powerful potions by leveling up their Alchemy skill level, choosing Alchemy perks, and equipping items with the Fortify Alchemy enchantment. Ingredients and labs are ubiquitous in the game, so mastering alchemy in Skyrim is simple, practical, and highly recommended.

Useful health potion perks

Skyrim is full of perks that help players hone their craft better. If a Dragonborn is serious about alchemy, then making sure every potion is brewed to perfection is essential. Alchemist players should get these perks as soon as possible.

  • Alchemist (5 ranks) - potions and poisons become 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and finally twice as strong with each subsequent rank.
  • Healer - Brewed potions to restore health, stamina and magicka become 25% more powerful.
  • Benefactor - Potions mixed with beneficial effects become an additional 25% stronger
  • Experimenter (Rank 3) - Each subsequent rank unlocks an additional effect when using an ingredient.
  • Purity - all negative effects are removed from the created potions

Some jewelry and pieces of armor can also come in handy when brewing potions to restore health. Of course, players can create and enchant their own clothing items. However, these three ready-made items from the Fortify alchemy will also come in handy for working at the brewing station:

  • Muiri Ring
  • Ring of pure mixtures
  • crosis

Skyrim is available now for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
