Find out how to plant trees on rocks in Animal Crossing, what difficulties await you, what you need to do to complete the goal, read in our guide.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Nintendo Switch has given players all the tools to create the island of their dreams: terraforming, waterscapes, and outdoor furniture. However, as a rule, these tools have strict rules - especially when it comes to where trees can be planted. With this glitch, introduced in patch 1.10, you can break one of those rules and plant trees on cliffs, opening the door to countless new design ideas for your island. Here's how to plant trees on rocks in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

How to plant trees on rocks in Animal Crossing

To get started, you will need a 3×3 piece of rock. Dig a hole right in the center - this is where you will plant your tree. But before that, terraform one square on one of the corners of the cliff face (make sure it's fully terraformed, not just rounded). You will then need to create a waterscape on the ground below. Create two water squares next to the empty corner you just terraformed, and then one in the empty corner itself. This should create a sloping patch of water in the corner, as shown in the image below.

This half-space of water tricks the game into thinking that there is an actual space near where you plant the tree, so climb back into the hole and voila! Now you can plant your tree there. This works with deciduous trees, fruit trees, cedars, coconut trees, and even bamboo! Just make sure the tree is fully grown before you plant it, otherwise it may not grow.

Now that you've planted the tree, all that's left is to give the rocks below the shape you want. When trying to terraform the rocks under the tree directly, you will get the message: "It's dangerous to modify this rock because the tree above might fall!", but you can get rid of the rocks under the tree by terraforming the corner pieces. Break the corner into a rounded cliff, then shatter it completely by terraforming the cliff next to it. Be careful, because once a rock is destroyed, you won't be able to terraform it again with a planted tree!

Since this is a glitch, please be aware that it may be fixed in the future; however this glitch was present in many patches and still exists in patch 1.10! This new flexibility in tree placement opens up a lot of new possibilities for your island, so get creative! Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a Nintendo Switch exclusive available now.

And that's all you need to know about how to plant trees on rocks in Animal Crossing.
