Find out which breed and class to choose in Biomutant, what difficulties await you, what you need to do to complete the goal, read in our guide.

In the vibrant world of Biomutant, you begin your journey by choosing a breed and class that essentially make you who you are. This is only at the start of the game, as as you progress you unlock branching skills and abilities that lead to a whole range of different playstyles, even if your starting breed and class don't reflect this. Biomutant does a great job of giving the player as much freedom as needed so they can experiment a lot with the options available in the game, so there's no reason to feel like you have to start a new game just to change either of the two options if the one you choose doesn't seems to be the best. See below for more on this.

What breed and class to choose in Biomutant

Breed

There are six breeds and five classes available in Biomutant (not counting the Mercenary perk), depending on what you want to focus on the most. Breed selection comes first, and this option will largely determine how your character will look in the game. Here are all available options:

  • Primal
  • Dumdon
  • Rex
  • Hyla
  • Fip
  • Murgel

They each specialize in different areas, for example the Primal leans more towards ranged attacks and psi abilities, while the Murgel breed is more focused on being "beautiful and charismatic", with increased charisma. Whatever you choose won't make much of a difference in the end result or your experience in the game, so in my opinion choose the breed you like the most in terms of appearance. You can also change their color later, so the pre-registered templates that appear on the selection screen will not reflect how your furry hero will look in the game.

Then you add points in the corresponding field by dragging the pointer to the section in which you want to get more points. For example, if you want to create the strongest warrior, drag the pointer to maximum strength and you will see a significant increase in strength, and therefore overall melee damage. Note that the more pointer on one side, the more points the opposite side loses to balance things out. I started my first playthrough of the game as a mixed bag, splitting points into agility and strength to create a speedy dual wielder. This ended up losing a few points in other areas such as Vitality and Charisma.

Class

All available classes in Biomutant are listed here, with Mercenary excluded as it is a DLC option:

  • dead eye
  • Commando
  • Psi freak
  • Saboteur
  • Sentinel

The choice of class will be more significant than the choice of breed, since your class will determine the abilities of the fist that you will have in the game, and the unique "class tree" that each of them has. After all, in the long run you will be able to get some abilities from other classes as well, but for that you will have to spend a decent amount of upgrade points. For this reason, it's best to choose a class that you know you'll be using to its full potential right from the start.

Each of them has one special ability that the others do not have, and you will also be able to unlock unique abilities after you complete the tutorial and reach the required number of points. These abilities are unique to your chosen class, so if you start with Dead Eye, for example, some of his abilities won't be available to other classes for most of the game. It's good if you decide ahead of time whether you'll be playing as a melee fighter or as a juggernaut with psi power during your journey, but be sure that you won't be deprived of the opportunity to try different things. As I mentioned above, I started out as a dual wielding assassin, but ended up using a lot of psi abilities and assault rifles, which became my main weapon for a while. The biomutant is really versatile with the abilities you will have as you progress, so don't push yourself too hard. For reference, here are the specializations of each class:

  • dead eye - Gives bonuses to a pistol-like playstyle with an excellent passive ability to instantly reload a weapon when it runs out of ammo.
  • Commandos is all about heavy weapons like shotguns and assault rifles and maximizes the damage dealt by those weapons.
  • psi freak - improves the "spell" style of play, giving bonuses to abilities, skills and innate energy regeneration.
  • Saboteur - can wield two weapons from the start of your adventure and has many bonuses to attack evasion and movement speed.
  • Guardian - the class closest to the "tank" class in the game. The priority will be the possession of two-handed melee weapons, as well as bonuses to health and strength.

And that's all you need to know about what breed and class to choose in Biomutant.
