There is a device that allows you to travel between different dimensions, and it is called the Dimensionator. At the very beginning of the game, it falls into the hands of the sinister Doctor Nefarius. In subsequent stages of the campaign, the heroes seek to obtain blueprints that will allow them to make another Dimensionator. Thanks to the opening of other dimensions, new important characters can join the plot of the game - Rivet (like Ratchet, she represents the Lombax race) and Keith (in a nutshell, this is the female "version" of the Clank - a machine that mainly plays the role of a companion).
At important points in the story, interdimensional travel is predetermined and you cannot influence them. The protagonist can, for example, fall into an interdimensional rift and thus move to a completely new place.
Thanks to the technical capabilities of the PS5, there is no download between visits to other dimensions. The game loads a new location / another dimension instantly.
In other dimensions, you can find alternative versions of the characters and villains known from the previous installments of the Ratchet & Clank series. Events in other dimensions may also differ. For example, in one dimension, Nefarius received the status of an emperor and became the ruler of the galaxy.
During the game, you can also witness scenes showing the instability of individual dimensions or the movement of monsters from other dimensions into the world that the character you control is currently exploring. All this should add variety to the gameplay.
How Interdimensional Travel Works in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
In most cases, the travel between dimensions is automatic. This means that the transition between dimensions takes place without your participation, for example, during a cutscene or a chase scene that allows you to cross interdimensional portals.
The first exception to this rule is finding and manually “opening” Pocket Dimensions. These are small locations, treated as separate dimensions. When you walk through the rift, you will find yourself in a completely new environment. These places are obstacle courses where you have to avoid traps or solve puzzles related to the environment. The goal is to find hidden unique pieces of armor (a kind of collectible).
Rifts are another exception. These are large purple crystals found in Blizar Prime.
By hitting them with a melee weapon, you can move between two options of the same location. In the case of the aforementioned Blizar Prime, this can be seen as two timelines - in one of them the location is still being developed and you can meet several friendly NPCs, and in the other version a great cataclysm has already occurred, and the place is destroyed and abandoned.
Small rifts are also dimensionally related to some extent, and can be found throughout most of the game. They allow you to bend time and space - Ratchet and Rivet can "catch" on them and, for example, avoid abysses, escape from enemies, or even get into hard-to-reach places. Using small rifts, however, does not move the character to another dimension. The character remains in the same reality.
