As you may have guessed, this means one thing. You can only equip new items and equipment outside of quests by returning to your base. Changing movements, adjusting equipment - everything can be done only there and only there. At the same time, while you are at your base, changing everything is very simple. You need to enter the character menu by pressing the appropriate button (eg view/back for Xbox) and you will be able to see the available options.
