Assimilation of minor factions is one of the key game mechanics.
Minor factions these are nations or peoples that have not reached the same technological level as the galactic empires. Including them in your Empire, you increase not just the population, but you get special bonuses.
By having different assimilated minor factions at your disposal, you will be able to fill the galactic systems with population more quickly, since the total population will be higher. Hence, there will also be an increase in labor resources.
For quick assimilation, do this: flatter the minor faction until you have the button to complete the request of the faction. You do it and that's it. If you don't want to waste time completing a task, but you have a lot of influence, just press the flattery button repeatedly. The faction will be assimilated when the meter is full.
It is very important to remember that your competitors can assimilate minor factions. Moreover, both you and your competitors can lay eyes on the same faction. As they say, whoever has time is well done.

In the screenshot you see the population window. Your faction has 20 Imperials (United Empire), 3 Horatio, 3 Hissho, 3 Harosh, 2 Kalgeros and 1 Niris. In fairness, we note that 20 is a decent amount, but 3 or less is very small. Try to move towards having a population of at least 15 assimilated minor factions each. When you reach 50 base population of your empire (as seen in the screenshot) you will receive a special bonus for your faction. It is important to understand that the main population of your faction is your faction nation. The United Empire has the Imperials, the Lumeris has the Lumeris, the Guardians have the Guardians, and so on;
To the right of these numbers, you see question marks and luxury resource icons. If you have question marks next to some minor factions in your population window, this means that you do not yet know what luxury resources will increase this population. You can automatically find out how to open more types of luxury resources in the galaxy. So, by spending luxury resources on the selected minor faction, you can increase their population. Which in turn will increase the effects of this faction. And of course it will have an impact on the political situation.
If you have chosen Horatio as your playable faction, you will be able to kill several units of each faction in order to extract DNA from them and introduce them into Horatio. Thus, the main population of Horatio will receive the effects of minor factions.
If you play as Vodiani, then you will need to deal with the extraction of essence - souls - in approximately the same algorithm. By killing units of small factions, you will receive an increase in the main population.
